First woman in space Valentina Tereshkova

The first woman to travel to space was Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova on June 16, 1963.

She orbited Earth 48 times aboard the Vostok 6 spacecraft. Tereshkova was also the first civilian to go to space, as she was not a professional astronaut but rather a factory worker and amateur parachutist.

How did the flight go?

Valentina Tereshkova's flight went relatively smoothly. She completed 48 orbits around the Earth and spent almost three days in space. However, there were some technical issues during the flight, including a problem with the spacecraft's automatic orientation system. Tereshkova had to manually control the spacecraft to ensure it stayed on course. Despite these challenges, Tereshkova successfully returned to Earth on June 19, 1963, becoming a national hero in the Soviet Union.
